Chapter Sixteen

The car ride went much smoother than the motorcycle as Chief Inaven took them to the Hallewel house.

Tremors still were running through Eeva’s body by the time they arrived, and she refused to let go of Keenen’s hand. It was the only thing grounding her as the adrenaline continued to drain from her system.

“You alright?” he whispered in an aside as they climbed out of the back of the vehicle.

Eeva shook her head. “Nope. But we’re doing this anyway.” She looked down at their entwined hands. “Thank you, by the way.” It was hard to look into his eyes, but Eeva wanted him to know she was sincere. “If you hadn’t been so quick thinking, I probably wouldn't have survived the hit.”

Keenen gave a slow nod. “I’ll always protect you.”

Eeva blinked, her emotions suddenly rushing to the surface. “I’m not sure why you’re so sure about that, but it’s also not the time to discuss it.” Throwing her hair over her shoulder, she straightened her shoulders and reluctantly let go of Keenen’s hand.

When he gave her a questioning look, she shook her head. “Partners don’t hold hands.”

His lips quirked into a boyish grin. “Says who?”

“Says the professional world,” Eeva shot back.

“They don’t flirt either,” Rhalyf growled, pushing between them and storming up to the door, where he quickly knocked.

Eeva hoped the flush in her cheeks could be attributed to something other than getting called out again for flirting with Keenen. He, on the other hand, didn’t seem the least bit perturbed by the scolding. “The scratches are gone,” Eeva whispered.

Keenen glanced down. “Told you.”

She scowled. “You’re always so cocky.”

“No.” He grinned. “I’m always right.”

The door opened, and a familiar set of yellow eyes met the group.

Eeva’s jaw dropped, and she nearly fainted at the sight of the butler alive and well.

Keenen’s arm went around her, holding her up, and he bent to whisper in her ear. “He’s a zombie, Eve. All it would have taken was a little magic for Melusina to put him back together. He was never truly alive to begin with.”

“Chief,” Regon intoned from the door. His eyes slowly moved over the group. “Madam and…Sir…”

In her shocked state, Eeva almost giggled when she realized the butler didn’t know Keenen’s last name, only to pause when she realized she didn’t know his last name. He’d only ever gone by Keenen.

And he’d kissed her!

She’d kissed a vampire, and she didn’t even know his last name.

“It’s Asmodeus,” Keenen said close to her ear.

Eeva shivered. “How do you do that?” she whispered back.

“Your every thought is in your eyes,” Keenen said with a chuckle. Then straightening, he waved her inside. “You’ll need a better poker face in the future.”

“I don’t plan to keep doing this in order to practice it,” Eeva said sweetly, smiling at stoic-faced Regon as she walked inside. Nobody else seemed surprised to see the servant, but Eeva was still trying to get her feet under her.

“This way, please,” Regon continued after shutting the front door.

Eeva’s gaze roamed the room, over the lost art and vases.
